The exchange of greeting cards dates back to the 14 th century and unconfirmed reports state the ancient Valentine’s Day card can be viewed at a museum in London. By mid 1800’s, homemade greeting cards were constructed using real lace, and ribbons. In 1843, Henry Cole, a British civil servant, unexpectedly created, produced and distributed the first official greeting card after falling behind in hand writing his Christmas greeting letter to family and friends.
Since their early conception, millions of greeting cards are purchased and exchanged each year to commemorate various holidays, birthdays, individual milestones and sentiments. Greeting cards are no longer reserved for Birthdays, Christmas or Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, but can be sent for the sole purpose of reaching out and connecting with someone else. Greeting cards are a simple act of love and an inexpensive but effective means of communicating one’s feelings to family and friends. A greeting card verse can often express emotions in words that the sender isn’t able to verbally communicate to the recipient. Often, a greeting card will be sent on an impulse because the sender recognized something in the verse that sparked the notion to cheer up an old friend or contact a long lost cousin.
